Drawing Creativity through Diversity

Some of you may not know this about me, but I used to be an actor (and arguably, a singer) at good ol’ Disney World. I remember going to the auditions, hoping to land a coveted contract to perform at “The Most Magical Place on Earth.” Sometimes it worked out, and sometimes it didn’t. But something that would always catch my eye is that every audition notice had a line that said:

Equal Opportunity Employer. Drawing Creativity through Diversity.

That phrase has always stuck with me because of its profound truth. Diversity not only helps eliminate discrimination, but it also helps bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the table. Having a diverse creative team takes advantage of their unique life experiences to create something new and exciting.

Speaking of celebrating diversity, I recently came across this amazing Facebook post by artist Dez Wilson who re-imagined The Addams Family as a black family. Just check out the artwork – it’s stunning! It’s so refreshing and exciting to see a bit of ourselves and our heritage within works that we all know and love.

This is why diversity & representation is so important in the creative world. It allows us to bring different cultures, ideas and stories together to create something magical – something that embraces and celebrates our differences.

The next time you sit down to create something, remember that when it comes to creativity, the more the merrier! Invite a variety of voices to help bring your ideas to life. You just never know what kind of magic you can make when everyone is invited to the table.

What do you think?
